Level of Innovation
TOMS Shoes is a two-fold case study of reinvention, significantly improving the shoe and philanthropy industries.
They create ecologically sensitive, durable footwear in a market that is known to deliberately put a short lifespan on products. Some mainstream shoe companies with loyal customers exploit this loyalty, calculating that even if a shoe falls apart in 6 – 12 months, the customer will still come back and purchase a new pair. TOMS designs their shoes to last, however, because not only does the customer depend on durability, their charity beneficiaries do, too.
TOMS’ One for One model is a financially sustainable way to give. They build contributions into their sales prices, matching every sale with a donation to a child in need. This is hugely innovative, and it’s being replicated by other philanthropic organizations.
